      No air, propane gas flows through the ring and once ignited provides a pilot light.

    49:00 There may be a substantial oversight, that description is for Sodium Bentonite, but there is also Calcium Bentonite which is has very different properties. some of those recipes that call for high amounts of bentonite are probably using Ca Bentonite. They have the same base chemical backbone structure but one has Sodium stuffed between the layers which allows very strong water absorption and the other is stuffed with Ca giving it a much more stable physical structure. Sodium bentonite is used for many industrial applications due to its gelling and expansive qualities.

      Unfortunately Phil has passed away. He could have answered with more authority than I have. I believe a flashback arrestor is used with a torch, and Phil talked about a raku burner. Burners do not need a flashback arrestor.

    Yesterday i went through Daniel Rhodes ' book called 'Kilns Design, Construction and Operation'. It is written, " He (Herman Seger) started with what is now known as Cone 4, which he formulated by finding the lowest melting composition of clay, potash feldspar and lime. He called this "cone 4" because the molecular formuls contained 4.00 mols of Si02". But in 4:24 it is mentioned the first cone that was made is cone 5.... I am confused. It'd be great if someone could help.

      Ground up fired clay can be used as grog. It can be added to clay to give it structural strength and some thermal shock resistance.

      Yes, it does. This recipe was created as parts rather than percentages. We decided not to change the recipe since it was not created by us. You can, of course, change the parts to percentages by dividing the amount of each ingredient by 110.

    Hello Phil, It's possible I skipped some videos, but I think I watched them all. I am building a gas stove and would like to buy a dryer burner. Which should I get natural gas or propane? In short, will natural gas be able to reach 1400 degrees C and which is more economical? Best Regards, V. Nikolić

    • @WashingtonStreetStudios
      @WashingtonStreetStudios 2 місяці тому

      I am sorry but Phil passed away. Natural gas is more economical in most areas, and uses a different burner. The temperature reached is more dependent on the kiln design, although you will need sufficient BTUs to heat the space.

    I've run across a raku glaze recipe for white crackle that that doesn't have weight or percent on it. Thing is, it adds up to 100, but there is Tin Oxide in it (I believe that's a colorant). I saw the part in the video where Mr. Berneburg discusses this problem, but without his handout I couldn't quite understand it. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks for everything y'all do! Recipe: Greatly borate - 65, Tenn. ball clay - 5, Neph. Sy. - 15, Tin oxide - 10, Flint - 5

    Love this series! The term "bisque" is not english, it probably came to the english language through french, and has a latin origin: biscoctus, bis-coctus, which means "cooked twice". We still use a very similar term in italian, that refers both to ceramics and cookies :D
